Where is best to travel in January?

January is a perfect month for a holiday. Relax and rejuvenate following the Christmas and New Years festivities with a relaxing trip, or start your new year on a high with a rush of adrenalin? There are many good reasons to treat yourself to a January holiday. Because  the post-Christmas, pre-Valentine’s Day time is for many destinations a slow season, our team here at Opulent Travel can find you lots of fantastic deals to start the year off right.

Winter Sun

Rihanna say the perfect way to spend a day in Barbados is to “Beach, eat, drink, dance, repeat.” With bleached-white, powdery beaches Barbados offers west coast luxury, or travel south slightly to a lively local community with fresh-caught fish on the barbecue, rum and dancing to reggae. January is the start of dry season with a daily average nine hours’ of sunshine.

January is one of the nicest times of the year weather-wise to visit Costa Rica. Right in the middle of the Costa Rican dry season but a little quieter giving you a great selection of hotels and resorts to choose from. If you are looking for rest and relaxation or adventure Costa Rica has it all.

It’s no secret the Canary Islands offer reliable winter sun. If you skip the east coast’s gaudy mega-resorts and you’ll discover a very cool side to Canary. Thanks to local architect César Manrique, who designed many of the islands must-see architectural feats: Jardín de Cactus, his magical cactus amphitheatre; or the home he designed for himself, where cave-like rooms are carved into lava bubbles (now home to the Fundacíon César Manrique).

Transiting the Panama Canal and cruising through Central America holds a great appeal. The Panama Canal portion of the cruise focuses on the transit itself, with ships offering onboard lectures as ships make their way through the locks, which are one of the greatest human wonders of the world. Within the rest of Central America, you can hike through the rainforest or relax on the beach.

Ski & Adventure

Powder Mountain in Utah, ‘Pow Mow’ is one of the best ski mountain in America. 500 inches of snow a year, 13 square miles of skiable terrain (more than Whistler), and barely an hour from Salt Lake City – with night skiing, minimal queues and multiple ‘freshies’, especially after January dumps. The pace of life on Powder Mountain is notably mellow, surrounded by sleepy villages with flannel clad locals and a Wild West vibe.

January and February have the most reliable snowfall in British Columbia, making it an ideal destination for not just snow skiing, but also ice-fishing, snowshoeing, dogsledding, and snowmobiling. In January you also have a good chance of seeing the Northern Lights.

City Breaks

Portugal is a great destination all year round. While the country’s mild winters might not be scorching, they are quieter and very affordable. Porto has undergone its own creative revival. The once-decaying medieval streets now buzz with kerbside cafés and refurbished townhouses, transformed into stylish hotels by local designers. The food scene fantastic, but still a bargain. Venture out of the city to the terraced port vineyards of the Douro Valley, 100km inland to round off the perfect relaxing break.

Cultural Experience

Chinese New Year, takes place at the end of January.

While Chinese New year  celebrations take place all over Asia – with festivities in major cities such as Hong Kong, Bangkok and Singapore.  Bangkok in Thailand hosts the biggest celebrations, with traditional parades, live music and parties taking place all over the city.

Chinese New Year in 2020 will take place on Saturday 25th January,
